Flying with a rollator: Lufthansa and other airlines at a glance

Anyone who relies on a rollator in their everyday life knows that it can sometimes be difficult to fit the practical walking aid into public transport. Nevertheless, people with rollators must still be able to travel as they wish. In addition to traveling by bus and train, this of course also includes air travel. In this article, we will show you which rules and regulations apply to various airlines if you take a rollator on board. The three largest airlines in Germany are Lufthansa, Eurowings and Condor. In the following sections, we will therefore summarize all the information you should know if you want to fly with one of these airlines with a rollator in your luggage.

Lufthansa

  • Register your need for care: In order to be able to fly with Lufthansa with a rollator, you should register your request up to 48 hours before departure. You can do this by phone or using an online form. Here you can specify exactly what kind of support you need. Lufthansa offers help both at the airport and on the plane itself.
  • Conditions of carriage: Up to two mobility aids can be carried free of charge on Lufthansa flights. According to the regulations, the rollator can be stowed either in the cabin or in the cargo hold of the aircraft.

Eurowings

  • Register your need for assistance: When flying with Eurowings, you can also register your rollator up to 48 hours before departure using the "Requirement for Assistance" form. You can do this either directly when you reserve your flight or later by email.
  • Conditions of carriage: Eurowings' rules also allow up to two walking aids such as rollators to be carried free of charge on flights. If these have been registered using the form mentioned above, they can be handed over to staff when boarding. After arrival, you will receive your rollator back at the baggage carousel at the latest.

Condor

  • Register mobility aid: Condor airline's rules regarding rollators state that they must be registered at least 48 hours before departure. This is done via an online form. A big advantage with Condor is that this registration is automatically carried over to the return flight.
  • Conditions of carriage: Condor's regulations also allow you to take up to two rollators or walking aids on board the aircraft. Condor also states that you will get the rollator back directly at the aircraft when you disembark, if this can be arranged. In cases where this cannot be done, you will get your walking aid back at the baggage carousel.

Conclusion

As you can see, the rules for travelling by plane with a rollator are quite similar for all airlines. The mobility aid should be registered with all airlines at least 48 hours in advance. The rules also state that up to two rollators or other walking aids can be taken on board the plane free of charge. Depending on the degree of disability, you can indicate on the registration forms what type of support you would like to receive at the airport and on the plane itself.
